The video went viral and was featured by the Washington Post, Slate, as well as other media outlets. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout during his youth. Even though he's lived in Australia for more than a decade Chieng does not hold citizenship or permanent residence status in Australia. Chieng laughed in 2018 when he said it was cynophobic.
